Glorious Mountain Days

Glorious Mountain Days: The 1902 hike that helped save the White Mountains, by Allison W. Bell and Maida Goodwin, 2018. This remarkable book features a series of letters and photographs by Hattie Freeman and Emma Cummings, enthusiastic mountain trampers and amateur naturalists who made a week-long trek across the Presidential Range in 1902. Their "glorious" experience at a time when the forests were threatedned by widespread logging inspired them to work for the protection of the White Mountains. Other prominent figures in the book are the beloved minister Edward Everett Hale (for whom Mt. Hale was named) and guide Vyron Lowe. Insight from the authors provides contemporary context for the journey, and interspersed through the book are modern day color images of the places visited by the early 20th cenutry trampers. 108 pp., 8" X 11."
